Chokra, Learning From Ladakh

Project Chokra

This project is an endeavor by Earth Building to share Ayee village, Ladakh as a Learning Experience.

Earth Building and Ayee

  • Ayee village is located in one of the corners of India, just 55 km away from the Siachen border, Ladakh. It is a community led village which is rooted in traditional organic farming practices. Also, self -sufficient in food, villagers of Ayee grow their own grains and vegetables and also rear cattle. With no concept of labour on the farms, the villagers come together as a community to help each other in the farming works.
  • Ayee is the native village of Stanzin Phuntsog, founder of Earth Building. Earth Building as a firm has a vision for sustainable life and system as a whole. We see ourselves as part of the village community and envision our base to be Ayee in the future.

About the Village:

  • The location of the village in itself ensures the unique systems practiced in the village. Located in the trans Himalayan regions of Ladakh, winters reach -30 to -40 degrees and the village is mostly cut off from the central systems for 4 to 5 months of the year. Unable to rely on the central system for food or heating, the villagers have come up with their own solutions that have been in place for centuries.
  • This unique geography and the solutions that people have come up with is a very interesting platform of learning for all those who want to know more about community living, sustainable living, a spiritual lifestyle, storing and preserving vegetables and fruits, and making crafts out of resources that would generally be considered waste.

Activities in the village:

Moving with the seasons, the village bustles about with different kinds of activities.
  • Traditional community based organic farming (May to September)
  • Basket weaving - Tsepo and Tsaskirs (September and October)
  • Pickling, Jam making, Fruit picking (September to November)
  • Spinning, weaving (October to February)
  • Ice skating, Ice climbing (December to March)
  • Local Community festivals (December, January)

Two Fold Intention for the Project

Our intention for the project is to share the village as a learning experience and also on the other hand we hope such events will create awareness and consciuosness about the developments that are slowly reaching the village.
  • Hosting events related to sustainability to share Ayee as a learning experience.
  • Mindful and conscious participants being an influence in the village in contrast to the fast paced development that is reaching Ayee.
  • Hosting common workshops where local and outsiders can take part like conscious food, waste management, etc.
  • Organizing trips for villagers to various alternative endeavours within Ladakh.
